It's kind of weird of how does gems work on Equestria :-?
I mean, they use it for clothes, for example, they are like... worthless... :P

AJ will be quite confused of the extremely exprensive cost of diamonds on our world :XD:

Dude, it's a land with talking rainbow ponies, Greek mythological creatures, "Changelings" who feed on love, dragons and whatever the hell Discord (the draconequus) is a mix of. THEIR WORLD IS MADE OF MAGIC. YOU CANNOT APPLY LOGIC TO THEIR AMAZING UNIVERSE.

Theory: The planet is way larger and therefore much more pressure to form gems, more gems less value... but it could simply be magic in the ground.:D (Big Grin)

Funny how those aren't worth much there in Equestria but in our worth its the motherload. I guess its say to asume that our gold and gems are very common in Equestria.

Money has value because people believe it is valuable.
Pony wear gems on their clothing.

Maybe this is another example why Rarity sucks with money?

Looks great.

Gems are worthless, you can just find them in the ground. If they were useful, why are they buried?

alright, i have a theory about their valuation of gems. i would say i think is it a defunct currency. it would have made logical sense before hand that the varying rarity of the gems would be useable as a currency.
as only unicorns have the capability to find such minerals with ease, they hence would have become the most powerful group.
the earth ponies can retain some value and control as they have the strength to dig, and could potentially mine minerals, perhaps like pinkie's rock farm. they also are the only ones that can grow food, which the forces the unicorns to trade their gems, and their dominance.
and the pegasi, well, they have their heads in the clouds. they probably had to resort to raiding or.. being warriors in order to get the food they need and to retain power in equestria. thus, they are seen by the rest as 'warmongering' in the past, or 'ruffians' as they currently do.
(make sense..? no? then think about the affluent ponies, those with importance. they are primarily unicorns, followed by earth ponies, and about 0 pegasi)

This totally fits with my head cannon that Equestria must have a geology fundamentally different from our own that makes gemstones really common. It' the only justification to them being common enough to sew on clothes or be eaten by dragons.

Funny thing is this would kind of be true in real life is certain groups didn't make sure that there are only a certain amount of diamonds in the market at a time. Diamonds are actually very common.

You forget, in our world, daimonds are actually more common than prices say because the people who mine them purposefully don't mine enough to meet demand, to keep prices high.
In Equestria, it's a different story. Kinda has to be, as dragons eat daimonds and other gemstones. Plus, Rarity can quickly locate them, then pull them out of the ground with magic. They're just not worth much there. Kinda like quartz in our world, but worse.

You make a valid point, but one could suspect that gems would be more valuable than bits in Equestria. Even more so, because dragons eat gems, it probably would go up in value due to them becoming increasingly rare. They probably might be even more valuable than our own society does.

Rarity may be able to easily locate and excavate gems, but at times her expeditions may be a bit daunting, having to travel farther and farther just to find gems. If one only has gems instead of bits to use as currency, each transaction would cause more damage to Equestria's economy, right?

Just like every gem Spike eats makes the economy better?
Hmm...
maybe they just grow like plants there. Makes Pinkie's "Rock Farm" (a gemstone farm) look a little bit more realistic, don't it? (And it wasn't just her imagination, Trixie worked on it. Probably the exact same one, owned by the Pie family.)

Oh Arceus Celestia, my headcanon is loading itself again...

As for the parasprites, the Pie family tell of an incident, many years back, when the Pie family berry farm was eaten completely by parasprites. The family started experimenting and researching for ways to to get them off the farm...
eventually, one of them used a parade to get them out of the farm. That knowledge has been passed down from Pie to Pie for generations. But like Ponyville generations later, it got rid of the parasprites, but not the devestation they caused. And it was too late. Not one berry plant was left- not a strawberry, not a blueberry... just one little diamond plant defiantly growing in the soil.
The Pies had to have the farm's output. All those generations of breeding the juciest berries for jams and pie fillings... the expansive pedigrees of Pie berries were gone. The farm was ruined. It was impossible for the farm to sustain the Pies through the winter. All they had was a diamond plant.
A diamond plant...
The Pies got an idea from that- A ROCK FARM! They could use that diamond plant, cultivate it, grow seeds from it (split open by hoof, of course, to speed things up), and grow more diamond plants- and sell thier fruits, the diamonds themselves!
Eventually they got some more plant varieties- opal, emerald, sapphire...
Most farmers (except the Pie family) just think of them as weeds. Thier expansive root systems allow Rarity to locate them quickly and detach the mineral growths on the roots, and also means that one plant can take up a whole lot of room underground and only show up as one tiny bush aboveground, leading to the Rock Farm's barren look. The seeds have tough mineral deposit shells, which have to be broken open by mother nature- or a sledgehammer wielded by Inky, Blinky, or any other Pie family member working on the farm, or Trixie. And Trixie might be a stretch. The "no-fun rule" may have come from a raucous celebration with music so loud, the parasprites were drawn to it like magnets, causing the problem in the first place- and paranoia connected with said fun for generations.

Man, I hate it when my headcanon randomly loads itself and goes off like that... at least it's a party canon and not something like a bass canon or an Orbital Friendship Canon (and yes, the official canon is an OFC)...

But if that's true, than this means one could easily grow gems limitlessly. Wonder if the Pies have a giant stash of gems and are trying to expand on thier monopoly on farmed gemstones by limiting supply, like the guys in the real world that mine diamonds do, only digging up gems now to expand thier stash and see which plants have the best and biggest gems, which obviously means they'll use that plant in the next planting, as they're probably annuals.
And obviously, with Rarity in Ponyville popping out gemstones left and right from wild gemstone plants, thier plan's not working there.

...
did it load itself and go off AGAIN?! Grrr...

Yeah, that sounds about right. There must be dozens of potential areas that satisfy the conditions for growing gemstones, but certain types of gems would need certain types of pressure, so while it is possible to grow several quantities of gems, it would probably be a bit more difficult and time consuming to farm, leading to an increase in value.

Taking the amount of time needed to farm in consideration, it definitely defines the gems' rarity in many cases (How else could the CMCs purchase an industrial-size pet dryer for just a sliver of a ruby?). I would assume the amount of time it took to grow a gem would depend on the type of gem and the amount of pressure applied to create such gem. Alternatively, if there was a rich deposit of minerals, geodes could be found and harvested for use as well, so working on a rock farm wouldn't be as bad as Pinkie made it seem. In fact, she may have been part of a wealthy family because of that farm.

I'm assuming gems and diamonds are worth quite a bit, just watch "Just For Sidekicks" if you want proof. Though I will agree trying to figure out just how their economy works is more confusing than advanced physics.

So, I've actually been working on a theory as far as that is concerned. Now, we know that the bit is their, pun unintended, gold standard of currency. To that end, since there are various different types of gemstones, I believe that each color has a different currency value to it, same with size. To that end, I would say that the gems work out to be like various denominations of currency.

As far as Spike eating gems, dude's a dragon. Depending on the lore you go with, they actually need to eat precious metals to fuel their flame. That and hasbro took D&D and slapped ponies onto it. So, yeah.

Seeing as how gems are an EDIBLE COMMODITY for Spike, gems can't be worth all that much. Bits seem to be the standby currency when you actually need a currency.
